Pretty Fix

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

For this week’s song, instead of recording a new one I notated an “old” one. Not that old really, it’s on my last cd which you should pretty much definitely get, right here at cdbaby. I started a new song, and I’m about halfway through the beginning, but with Christmas coming up I won’t be able to finish it. But I will be able to do a lot of skiing while I’m home all this week, woohoo!

To read this song you need Finale Notepad, which you can download for free here from finale music. When I get back from vacation I will print this out and scan it with fingerings so that it’ll be easier to understand. If you watch the youtube video it probably makes it a bit easier to figure out how to make the chord shapes and do the plucking patterns.  Enjoy!

On the Subway

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Yesterday on the subway I noticed a sweet little old lady sitting near me. She would have been totally unremarkable except she was wearing a black scarf that had a huge skull and crossbones on it.

Then, this morning on my way to work, a girl standing near me was reading her hard cover copy of “Every Thug Needs a Lady.”

I work in a software company in Manhattan. Althought there are nice big windows, the view is of a parking lot and an apartment building. Yesterday, one of my highschool buddies who is living it up out west as a ski bum sent me this encouraging picture, with the thoughtful caption: “My office has a better view than yours.” (note: His office is a chairlift)

Recording of the 12/18 Show

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Thanks so much to all those who came last night! I had a blast and I hope you did too. Mike was kind enough to record our performance and post it on his webpage at this address:

Show TONIGHT

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

12/18 7pm at the Living Room

I love playing here. The sound is always good, the audiences are great, and the overall environment is just right. I’m playing with Mike Weiser on keys and Chris Stromquist on drums. This should be a good one - we’ll try to rig up some recording thing to try and record it, and I’ll post it later. HOPEfully someone will take some pictures and send them to me.

the Plan in Action

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Ok - so here we go. This is the first installment of the project. While this isn’t a “brand” brand new song, as in I didn’t literally write it this week, I did record it on Wednesday, so that counts. Plus, as soon as I was done I sent it off to Mike, and he is currently recording his keyboard parts. As soon as that’s all done I will post the final version.

For now, here it is. The first installment of the Nick Ogawa proliferation project. The song is called “Only Fooling Yourself.” This is the first draft, but you’ll get the idea. Hope you like it!

This is It

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

So this is my brand new blog-style website. My plan is to post the new songs that I write, in as timely a fashion as I can, with a goal of coming as close to a song a week as possible. To supplement this insane and probably impossibly ambitious productivity I’ll be posting short stories and anecdotes as blog entries. Some of these may be actual true events from my life, some of them may be made up, some may be both. Mike Weiser has agreed to help me on the musical side of this project of prolificness and his keyboard contributions are greatly appreciated. For now, although I will be posting studio versions of some of these songs soon, you can hear our rehearsal from yesterday here.
